What is the height that you should allow your lawn to reach before cutting it? How much of the grass blade should be mowed down?
An optimal height for cutting your grass in the summer is approximately 2½ inches. However, you should only remove the top 1/3 of the grass blade at each mowing. Therefore a good height to cut your grass would be 3 2/3 inches high.

What kind of gas do I use for my lawnmower?
For the 2-cycle engines you need to mix your gas with oil. Most units require a 50:1 ratio or 200 ml of premium 2-cycle oil to 10 liters of 89 octane or greater fuel. For the new 4-cycle engines, you need to use straight gas. Don’t mix it with oil.

After mowing the lawn, do I have to rake up or bag the grass clippings, or can they remain on the lawn?
Grass clippings left on the lawn only become a problem if they are too thick. You won’t have to rake if you mow the lawn before the grass gets overly tall. A good way to escape from having to rake grass clippings is to mow with mulching lawn mowers or buy mulching blades for your mower. Come in to our parts department today and buy your mulching blades.

What do I do if my snow thrower isn’t throwing the snow properly?
If the conditions, such as wet or heavy snow, aren’t the reason for a significant change in your snow thrower, check your auger belt and lever tension. All you may need is an adjustment.

What’s the scoop on old gas?
Make sure you don’t use old gas, as it is harmful to your machine. Never use gas that’s more than 3-months old. Always use new fuel from season to season; and if you aren’t going to use your equipment regularly, it would be wise to let the motor run dry of gas. Be sure to drain old gas out of your mowers after your last use of the season. For winter machines, such as snowblowers, Briggs & Stratton have a fuel additive that you can add to your gas if you only use your machine every 3 weeks, or if it has been sitting for 3 weeks or longer.

What do I do for fall clean-up?
Make sure you rake your leaves or use a leaf vacuum in the fall to avoid the leaves smothering your grass over the winter.

What’s the scoop on my mowing blades?
The sharper your blade, the better mowing cut you will receive. It is important to have your blade professionally sharpened and balanced at least once a year. Bring your blades in today and have us professionally sharpen them for you. The sharper your blade = a better cut = healthier grass.

Why won’t my machine start in cold weather?
There are two main problems why machines won’t start in the winter. The first is using old fuel, and the second is too much priming or choke. So make sure you use new fuel, and if your motor is flooded, let the machine sit for a while or dry the spark plug.

Why can’t I just wait longer in between mowings, each time simply cutting the lawn when the grass is higher and therefore reducing the overall number of cuttings?
When mowing is done properly, it stimulates the grass to lushness and better health. It is important to mow your grass regularly for it to stay healthy.

Is there a right and wrong way of mowing the lawn?
Yes. It is best to alternate the direction in which you mow each mowing session. This will prevent your grass from “getting into a rut” that results from your lawn mower wheels passing over the same area in the same direction each time you mow. It will also avoid having the lawn mower blade beating at the grass in the same direction at every mowing.
